I have had a few requests for different ideas for maths starters.

There is a lovely website that provides a different maths starter for each day of the year. You can search the archives and it works very well with a data projector:

Here are some more nice sites with lots of ideas for mental starters:

Teaching ideas

Mr Gallinagh’s Maths Starters – an excellent program of 10 questions for any topic you like. You can specify how much time you give for each of the questions. Can also be used as a test at the end of a lesson to find out how much pupils have learned.

Super Maths World – some of the games are for free. Others you need to be registered to use.

I love Maths Games – puzzles, games and starters

Calculator Activites – 15 short problems and games designed to make use of a calculator. Ideal for lesson starters.

If you come across any other good sites with starters on, please post them as comments below this post. Thanks a lot!

Make a dodecahedron calendar

One of the books I have found most invaluable for creating activites for Maths Club is 1000 Playthinks by Ivan Moscovich. It’s full of colourful puzzles, problems and activities for two or more people. At the time of writing, it’s available on Amazon at £10.74 and I think this is a great bargain.
